PNG to Transparent Video Overlay for the iPadOS FMBooth

Legacy Article: This article covers the legacy FMBooth (Windows + iPadOS) software. FMBooth (Windows + iPadOS) has been replaced by FMX. See FMX documentation →

This guide explains how to convert a PNG file into a transparent video overlay suitable for the iPad FMBooth app using Adobe software. This process can be completed using either After Effects or Adobe Animate.

Export Process

When exporting your file, select QuickTime with AppleProRes and alpha channel. Ensure Media Encoder is open during the export process, as it will automatically add the file to the rendering queue.

Rendering and Encoding

Once Media Encoder opens, the file will render automatically. After rendering completes, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the file
  2. Select Services → Encode Selected Video Files
  3. Configure settings:
    • Format: HEVC 1080p
    • Enable: Preserve Transparency

This encoding step accomplishes two objectives: converting to H.265 format and significantly reducing file size (for example, a reduction from 215MB to 14MB).

Final Step

Rename the file as desired once encoding finishes.
