How To Design an Overlay Using the Existing PSD Files and From Scratch

Legacy Article: This article covers the legacy FMBooth (Windows + iPadOS) software. FMBooth (Windows + iPadOS) has been replaced by FMX. See FMX documentation →

Using an Existing PSD File

Start by opening one of the existing PSD files. You'll notice that the layers are named and separated into organized folders like Back, Bats, and Halloween. The Back folder contains the overlay shape and image, while other folders hold decorative elements.

Remove unnecessary folders to clean up your file. Then:

  1. Add your desired image or pattern for the frame
  2. Place it above the overlay layer
  3. Highlight the new layer and press Alt while clicking on the cursor to create a clipping mask

This technique allows you to easily customize the overlay with your own design. You can drag additional graphic elements directly into Photoshop to enhance your overlay.

Starting From Scratch

Create a new Photoshop file with these specifications:

  • Size: 1200x1800 px
  • Resolution: 300
  • Color Mode: CMYK

Next, build your overlay foundation:

  1. Unlock the default white layer (it becomes "Layer 0")
  2. Create a square with a 2:3 ratio for the photo area
  3. Right-click and select Rasterize Layer
  4. Use the Magic Wand tool to select the black square
  5. Right-click and choose Select Inverse
  6. With the selection active, highlight the first layer and add a Mask Layer

You've now created the base structure for your custom overlay design.
