Layout Builder

Updated 5 days ago · 4 min readBeginner

The Layout Builder is a visual drag-and-drop editor in Foto Master Cloud for designing the final photo output -- the image guests receive via print, email, gallery, or social media. It's where you define how captured photos are arranged, sized, and styled in the final output.

You access the Layout Builder from the Cloud dashboard when editing an event's layout configuration.

What Is a Layout?

A layout is a visual template that defines the composition of the final photo. It determines:

  • Where captured photos appear (size and position)
  • Where overlays, logos, and branding are placed
  • Where QR codes appear for instant sharing
  • Where text elements display (static or dynamic)
  • Where signature/drawing areas are positioned
  • The overall dimensions and orientation of the output

Element Types

The Layout Builder supports these element types that you can add to your canvas:

Camera (Photo Placeholder)

The camera element defines where the captured guest photo appears in the final layout. You can add multiple camera elements for multi-photo layouts (e.g., photo strips, collages).

  • Position, size, and rotation are fully adjustable
  • Multiple camera elements create multi-shot layouts

Image

Static image elements for adding overlays, backgrounds, frames, borders, logos, or any graphic to the layout.

  • Upload PNG, JPG, or SVG files
  • Supports transparency (PNG) for overlay effects
  • Resize, position, and rotate freely

Text

Text elements for adding labels, event names, dates, client branding, or dynamic content.

  • Static mode -- Fixed text that stays the same for every photo
  • Dynamic mode -- Text that changes per session (survey responses, AI palm readings, etc.)
  • Full typography control: font family, size, color, alignment, bold/italic/underline

QR Code

QR code elements that guests can scan to access their photos digitally.

  • Cloud mode -- Automatically links to the Cloud gallery or specific media
    • Link to: Media (direct photo link) or Gallery (full event gallery)
    • Media type: Final Photo, Video, or GIF
  • Custom mode -- Link to any URL you specify

Signature

Signature/drawing area placeholder for layouts that include guest signatures or drawings from the Sign & Draw workflow step.

Full-canvas image carousel element for cycling through multiple images or backgrounds.

Canvas Features

  • Drag and drop -- Position elements anywhere on the canvas
  • Resize handles -- Scale elements precisely
  • Rotation -- Rotate any element to any angle
  • Snapping -- Snap to grid for precise alignment
  • Layers panel -- Control element stacking order (front/back)
  • Undo/Redo -- Full history support for all changes
  • Zoom -- Zoom in/out for detailed editing

Layout Properties

Each element has configurable properties:

  • Position -- X and Y coordinates (pixels)
  • Size -- Width and height (pixels)
  • Rotation -- Angle in degrees
  • Layer order -- Front-to-back stacking

Additional properties vary by element type (font settings for text, image source for images, QR configuration, etc.).

Camera Filters (Platform-Specific)

The Layout Builder supports camera filters that are applied in real-time during capture:

iPad filters: None, Black and White, Sepia, Double Exposure, Hue Adjust, False Color, Noir, Thermal, Saturated, Comics, Color Invert, Inked, Line, Spot Color, Crystallize, Pixellate

Windows filters: Configured separately in FMX Windows global settings

Working with Layouts

Creating a New Layout

  1. In the Cloud dashboard, navigate to your event
  2. Open the Layout tab
  3. Add elements using the toolbar
  4. Position and configure each element
  5. Save your layout

Import/Export

  • Export JSON -- Save your layout as a JSON file for backup or sharing
  • Import JSON -- Load a previously exported layout

Tips for Great Layouts

  • Start with the output dimensions that match your print size (4x6, 5x7, etc.)
  • Use guides and grid snapping for precise alignment
  • Test with actual photos before the event to verify proportions
  • Keep text readable -- avoid placing text over busy photo areas
  • Use transparent PNG overlays for professional framing

Tip: The AI Layout Creator can generate layouts from a text description. Describe what you want (e.g., "4x6 strip with 3 photos, company logo at top, QR code at bottom") and the AI builds it for you.
