Using Nikon and Sony Cameras with FMX
FMX for Windows now supports Nikon DSLR cameras and Sony Alpha series cameras, alongside Canon and webcams. This means you can run FMX using gear you already own, without replacing your entire setup.

Camera Integration by Brand
Canon (Recommended)
Canon offers the most complete integration with FMX. Full remote control of camera settings — ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance — is available directly from within FMX. All Foto Master Turn Key solutions ship with Canon cameras for this reason.
If you are starting fresh or want maximum control and reliability, Canon is still the recommended choice.
Nikon and Sony
Nikon and Sony use basic tethered capture. You configure camera settings directly on the camera body, while FMX handles live view, triggering, and file transfer automatically.
- FMX cannot remotely change ISO, shutter speed, or aperture on Nikon/Sony — adjust these on the camera before starting the session
- Live view and photo triggering work the same as Canon
- File transfer after capture is automatic
Note: Nikon and Sony support applies to FMX for Windows only. FMX for iPad uses the built-in iPad camera.
Connecting a Nikon or Sony Camera
- Connect the camera to the PC via USB (use the cable that came with the camera)
- Set the camera to PTP or PC Remote mode in the camera's USB settings
- Turn the camera on
- Open FMX and go to Global Settings → Camera Tab
- Select your camera from the detected device list
- Click Start Live View to confirm connection
Tip: Set your camera to manual mode (M) before events so exposure settings stay fixed and consistent across all guest sessions. See Camera Tab (Global Settings) for all camera configuration options in FMX.
Webcam Support
FMX also supports standard USB webcams for setups that do not require a DSLR. Webcams connect and appear automatically in the Camera Tab without any additional configuration.
Which Camera Should You Use?
- Turn Key package — your booth ships with a Canon camera already configured. No action needed.
- BYO with Canon — full remote control from FMX. Best for photographers who want software-level camera management.
- BYO with Nikon or Sony — tethered capture works reliably. Set exposure manually on the camera before each event.
- BYO with webcam — plug and play, no additional setup.
