FMX for Windows: System Requirements
Before installing FMX on your Windows computer, make sure your system meets the requirements below. Meeting the recommended specifications will ensure smooth performance during events, especially when using live camera preview, video recording, or AI-powered features.
Operating System
- Minimum: Windows 10 (64-bit), version 1903 or later
- Recommended: Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11
FMX is a 64-bit application and does not support 32-bit versions of Windows.
CPU (Processor)
- Minimum: Intel Core i5 (8th generation) or AMD Ryzen 5 3000 series
- Recommended: Intel Core i7 / i9 (10th generation or newer) or AMD Ryzen 7 / 9 5000 series
A faster processor improves live view performance, video encoding, and the overall responsiveness of the booth experience. Multi-core processors are especially beneficial when running video recording alongside live preview.
RAM (Memory)
- Minimum: 4 GB
- Recommended: 8 GB
FMX is designed to run comfortably on typical booth computers. AI processing is handled by Foto Master Cloud, so local memory is mainly used for the live booth experience, camera preview, video recording, and cloud syncing. 8 GB gives good headroom for long events.
Storage
- Minimum: 2 GB free disk space for the FMX application
- Recommended: SSD with at least 50 GB free space for event media
FMX stores captured photos, videos, and processed media locally before syncing to the cloud. An SSD is strongly recommended for fast image saving and print rendering. The default storage location is C:\FMX\.
Tip: Enable the auto-delete feature in Global Settings to automatically clean up old event data and free storage space after a configurable number of days.
Required Runtime Components
FMX includes the required Windows runtime components in its installer. You do not need to install .NET or extra camera software separately unless Foto Master Support specifically instructs you to.
Graphics Card (GPU)
FMX does not require a dedicated graphics card. Live camera preview, countdown and animation playback, video recording, and chroma key processing are designed to run on the computer's processor. A dedicated GPU is not required for normal booth operation.
- Minimum: Any integrated graphics adapter that can drive the booth display at the desired resolution (Intel UHD, AMD Radeon Vega, or equivalent)
- Recommended: Same as minimum -- spend the budget on CPU and RAM instead
Why CPU performance matters
FMX is tuned for reliability on the mixed hardware commonly used in photo booths. Processor speed and available memory have the biggest impact on live preview, video playback, and recording smoothness during events.
If you see video playback stutters or dropped frames, first check the CPU and RAM recommendations on this page and close unnecessary background applications.
Camera Support
FMX supports DSLR and mirrorless cameras from Canon, Nikon, and Sony, as well as standard USB webcams. FMX includes the camera connection components it needs, so you do not need to install separate camera software for normal operation.
| Camera Type | Supported Actions | Setup Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canon DSLR/Mirrorless | Live View, Take Photo, Record Video, and remote exposure/color settings. | Connect by USB and use Manual mode for consistent booth results. |
| Nikon DSLR/Mirrorless | Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video on compatible cameras. | Use the camera's supported USB remote/PTP mode. If FMX shows the camera as detection-only, it cannot be used for booth capture. |
| Sony Mirrorless | Live View, Take Photo, Record Video, and support remote photo settings. | Set the camera to PC Remote mode before selecting it in FMX. |
| USB Webcam | Live View, Take Photo, and Record Video. | Works with standard USB webcams and built-in cameras. Choose resolution and frame rate in the Camera tab. |
Tip: For Canon, Sony, Nikon, and webcam workflows, Record Video records from the camera preview shown in FMX. It does not require pressing the camera body's movie-record button.
USB Ports
- Minimum: 1 USB port for your camera connection
- Recommended: 2-3 USB 3.0 ports
Additional USB ports may be needed for:
- Payment terminals (Nayax devices connect via serial/COM port)
- Coin acceptors (Pulse devices connect via serial/COM port)
- External peripherals (LED rings, proximity sensors, barcode scanners)
Use powered USB hubs if your booth setup requires more ports than your computer provides.
Internet Connection
FMX operates in both online and offline modes, but certain features require an internet connection:
Requires Internet
- Logging in and activating your license
- Syncing events from Foto Master Cloud
- AI-powered processing (AI Cartoon, AI Face Swap, AI Headshot, AI Background Removal, etc.)
- Cloud printing via FMPrint
- Sending photos by Email, SMS, or QR code
- Uploading media to event galleries
- Shopify POS and Stripe payment processing
Works Offline
- Running the booth experience (workflow execution)
- Camera capture (photo and video)
- Local printing via Windows printer drivers
- Offline gallery viewing and local sharing
- Nayax and Pulse (coin acceptor) payment processing
- Chroma key (green screen) processing
Tip: For events where internet connectivity is unreliable, FMX will queue cloud operations (uploads, emails, SMS, prints) and process them automatically when connectivity is restored. Configure your event workflows to minimize dependency on cloud features for the smoothest guest experience.
Display
- Minimum resolution: 1280 x 720 (720p)
- Recommended: 1920 x 1080 (1080p) or higher
FMX supports both landscape and portrait display orientations. Touchscreen displays are recommended for the best guest experience, as most workflow steps respond to touch input.
