3D Mosaic Wall Setup - Grid Board and Structure Planning

Legacy Article: This article covers the legacy Photo Mosaic Wall software. The next generation — PMWall — is coming soon.

Grid Board Planning Process

The foundational step involves creating a vector object in Adobe Illustrator.

Critically, the size of the file should be an even number (in inches) to ensure proper proportions.

Workflow Stages

  1. Vector Creation: Design your outline using Illustrator's tools
  2. File Format: Save as DXF to enable compatibility with production software
  3. Image Integration: Position your background photograph into the DXF file, using compound paths and clipping masks to marry the image with your vector outline
  4. Export: Save the file as PNG, 300 DPI for submission to the mosaic software
  5. Software Input: Upload the final PNG into Photo Mosaic Software for processing

Practical Implementation

The physical structure demands careful engineering:

  • It should be durable and steady enough to resist an adult light hand push
  • Maintain a single flat surface for tile application

Material Selection

  • Wood and plastic offer durability
  • Styrofoam coated with 1mm foam PVC sheets reduces weight -- essential for transportation logistics

Production Requirements

Prepare your final outline:

  1. Place the outline file created on the grid board file under it
  2. Mark the outline with a spot color
  3. Save it as a PDF
  4. Send this PDF to a print shop specializing in PVC board production for cutting

Tip: Consider workshop collaboration regarding replaceable grid board design and on-site assembly strategies before delivery.
